Compounded medication, prepared for one patient
A compounded medication is made to a prescriber’s order for one specific person. Brandon Pharmacy & Compounding offers personalized nonsterile compounding based on your healthcare provider’s prescription. Our team works with patients and prescribers to prepare customized medications when commercially available options do not meet individual needs. Preparations are made at Brandon and sent to our other stores, so you can collect at whichever is closest to you.
When compounding is the answer
- The strength your prescriber wants is not manufactured
- You cannot swallow a tablet and need a liquid, cream or troche
- A dye, filler, lactose or preservative in the commercial product causes a reaction
- The medication has been discontinued but is still right for you
- A child or an animal needs a dose far smaller than anything on the market
- Several medicines could be combined into one preparation

Testosterone preparations and related therapies, prepared to a prescriber’s order.
Women’s health
Preparations used in women’s health, including bio-identical hormone therapy.
Hormone replacement
Creams, troches and capsules for hormone replacement therapy, at prescribed strengths.
Dermatology
Topical preparations for skin conditions, scarring, hair loss and wound care.
Weight management
Preparations used alongside a weight management plan, on a valid prescription.
Fertility
Preparations used in fertility treatment, prepared to the prescriber’s specification.
Low dose naltrexone
LDN capsules at the low strengths prescribers ask for, which are not commercially made.
How to get a compounded prescription
- Talk to your prescriber. Compounding needs a prescription, the same as anything else. If they are unsure what is possible, ask them to call us — we talk to prescribers every day.
- Send the prescription to any of our stores. It is routed to Brandon automatically.
- We prepare it at Brandon and send it to your store.
- Collect it locally, or have it delivered free.
On compounded GLP-1 medications. We do not compound GLP-1s in house. We fill brand-name GLP-1 prescriptions, and where a compounded version is prescribed it is prepared by a partner 503A sterile compounding pharmacy and dispensed to you by us. A valid prescription is required either way.
Cost and insurance
Most compounded medications are not covered by insurance, because the finished preparation has no NDC for a plan to price. We will tell you the cost before we make anything, and we can often give your prescriber a cheaper alternative to consider.
About compounded medications. A compounded preparation is made by our pharmacists to your prescriber’s specifications, for you individually. Compounded preparations are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality. Descriptions on this page explain what a preparation is; they are not claims that it is proven to treat any condition. A valid prescription is required, and we dispense in Florida only.
How we compound, and to what standard
Compounding is only as good as the room, the ingredients and the person doing it. These are the standards we work to, and they are fair questions to ask of any compounding pharmacy.
- USP <795> — the standard for non-sterile preparations: creams, ointments, capsules, troches, liquids.
- Sterile preparations — anything given by injection or infusion has to be made under sterile conditions. We do not perform sterile compounding at any of our five pharmacies. Where a prescription calls for one, it is compounded by the partner 503A sterile compounding pharmacy we hold a contract with, and dispensed to you by us.
- USP <800> — the standard for handling hazardous drugs safely, which protects staff as well as patients.
Ingredients come from FDA-registered suppliers, with a certificate of analysis for each lot. We keep records of what went into your preparation, which batch it came from, and who made it.
Where it is made
Compounding for the group is carried out at our Brandon facility and sent to whichever of our pharmacies you use. So you collect it locally, but it is made in one place, by the same pharmacists, to the same standard.
